Intern Diary: Mia
Being a social media intern at JMG PR has given me such a strong look into how digital strategy connects directly to public relations. When I first started, I thought running social accounts would just mean scheduling posts and writing captions, but I’ve quickly realized it’s so much more than that. Every single post has a purpose, whether it’s building engagement, supporting a client campaign, or tying back to press coverage. I never noticed before how strategic social media actually is until I was in the middle of it.
Most of my day-to-day involves creating content calendars, running and managing our Off The Clock TikTok, editing and creating reels for the podcast, and writing/coming up with newsletter and broadcast ideas for our Instagram.
One of the coolest parts of my internship at JMG PR has definitely been helping with the podcast Call Your Publicist. I wasn’t expecting to get so involved in that side of things, but it’s honestly been such a good learning experience. At first, I was a little intimidated because podcast editing seemed super technical, but once I got into it, I realized how creative it can be.
My role has been a mix of editing episodes, cleaning up the audio, and making sure everything flows smoothly. It’s actually kind of fun piecing it together, removing awkward pauses, adjusting the sound, and making sure the final version sounds professional. I’ve also helped with writing captions and creating social clips to promote the episodes, which ties in perfectly with my social media work. It’s been cool seeing how one piece of content (the podcast) can be repurposed across platforms in so many different ways.
Working on the podcast has also shown me how important storytelling is in PR. It’s not just about putting information out there, it's about making it engaging and relatable. When I’m editing, I try to listen as if I were the audience: does this part grab my attention? Is the transition smooth? Would I want to keep listening? That mindset has helped me get better not just at editing, but also at understanding how people consume content.
Overall, this internship has pushed me to be more creative, more detail-oriented, and more confident sharing my ideas with a team. I’ve gotten a real taste of what it’s like to run social media on a professional level, and it’s made me even more excited about pursuing this career path. It’s definitely been a fast-paced, learning-filled experience, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
