Intern Diary: Lily
As I reflect on my time interning at JMG PR this semester, I am so proud of the work I’ve contributed to and am so grateful for the team that has supported me and helped me grow. I heard about JMG PR through one of my classmates who shared her experience, and I took it upon myself to apply. Applying was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It not only taught me technical PR skills like pitching, writing and media outreach, but also advanced my professionalism and work experience. JMG showed me that agency work is something I want to pursue when I graduate this upcoming spring!
I specifically got to improve my abilities in research and writing. When working with clients, research is the foundation of everything we do.
I specifically got to improve my abilities in research and writing. When working with clients, research is the foundation of everything we do. Being given the opportunity to apply it to real projects gave me a special kind of motivation and drive. The main thing that has been drilled into my head is that improving writing skills is a never-ending, continuous pursuit. I also learned that it is important to exercise the brain through writing, just like exercising the body, in order to stay sharp. Writing has proven to me that it is essential through activities such as pitching, press releases and press summaries. It is something that the PR professional is always doing, and something that is not always easy.
Building my PR skills was a huge bonus, but the people I worked with every day are what truly made this internship unforgettable. Cara was both my coach and my biggest cheerleader, and we made a great team to work towards producing the best work we can for our clients. She showed me how to take feedback and turn it into real improvement, which strengthened my learning process as a professional. On top of that, our team-wide “Sip the Tea” calls allowed me to feel further connected with my fellow interns as we talked about current pop culture relevant to PR! There was never a moment I felt disconnected, and that sense of connection made me realize how much I value the culture and environment JMG created. Overall, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience!
