Intern Diary: Amyah

My experience interning at JMG PR has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding. I came into this internship wanting to gain more real-world experience in public relations, and I’m leaving with a much deeper understanding of the industry, stronger writing skills, and a clearer sense of the direction I want my career to take. JMG PR gave me the opportunity to step into a fast-paced agency environment where I was trusted with meaningful work and encouraged to grow every day.

Most of my work focused on writing and communication, which I actually ended up enjoying a lot more than I expected.

I worked on things like press releases, media pitches, client briefing memos, and building media lists. At first, some of it felt a little new and overwhelming, especially figuring out how to tailor pitches or identify the right journalists, but over time it started to make a lot more sense. I got comfortable using tools like Muck Rack and Google Workspace, and it felt good to see myself getting faster and more efficient with them.

One of my favorite aspects of the internship was seeing how much trust I was given to complete real tasks independently. Being able to take ownership of my work pushed me to be more confident and intentional in everything I produced. While I initially struggled at times with imposter syndrome, I gradually learned to speak up more, ask questions, and trust that I belonged in the space. That shift in mindset was one of the most important parts of my growth.

I also really liked the structure of the day-to-day environment. We had morning check-ins, consistent Slack and Zoom communication, and how can I not mention our “Sip the Tea” meetings, where we talked about social media trends and pop culture news. Those sessions were honestly one of my favorite parts because they made the remote environment feel a lot more personal and relatable. It was a space where we could step back from client work, connect with each other, and also see how real-time trends influence PR strategy.

Looking back, I think the biggest takeaway for me is that I genuinely enjoy PR writing and media relations more than I realized. There’s something really rewarding about putting together a pitch or press release and seeing how it can turn into real media coverage for a client. Overall, I’m really grateful for the experience, connections and everything I had the opportunity to learn at JMG PR.
