Intern Diary: Kaitlyn

Looking back on my time as a public relations intern at JMG PR, I’m honestly so proud of how much I’ve grown in just one semester. As a student in South Florida, I was really excited to jump into a remote internship with a New York based agency, but this experience ended up being the perfect bridge between what I’ve been learning in the classroom and how PR really works day to day.

From the very beginning, this wasn’t a “sit back and watch” kind of internship.

I was trusted with real responsibilities: researching media contacts, building and updating media lists, drafting pitches, tracking coverage, and supporting different client initiatives. Getting to see how all of those pieces come together to shape a story and support a client gave me a much deeper understanding of the industry. I started to really see how strategy, timing, and relationships all play a role in successful PR.

I also got a firsthand look at how fast-paced and ever-changing PR can be. There were plenty of moments where priorities shifted, and I had to quickly pause one task to jump into something more urgent. Learning how to adapt, stay organized, and still deliver my best work under time pressure is something I’ll carry with me into every future role. It pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way and helped me gain a lot of confidence in my abilities.

Even though the internship was remote, I never felt disconnected. The culture at JMG PR is so welcoming and supportive, and I always felt like part of the team rather than “just an intern.” Whether it was feedback on my work, quick check-ins, daily “sip the tea” meetings, or simply feeling comfortable asking questions, that support made such a difference. It created a space where I could learn, make mistakes, and improve without feeling intimidated.

I want to give a special thank-you to Natasha for being such a kind, patient, and encouraging leader throughout this experience. Her guidance helped me better understand the day-to-day workflow and expectations in agency life. I’m also incredibly grateful to have worked with Kristen, whose feedback and insight pushed me to sharpen my writing and think more strategically about each assignment. Together, they both played a huge role in my growth this semester.

Overall, this internship has not only strengthened my skills in writing, research, and media outreach, but also given me a clearer vision of the type of PR work I want to do after graduation. I’m so thankful for the opportunity to learn from the JMG PR team and for the trust they placed in me. This experience has been such an important step in my journey, and I’m excited to carry everything I’ve learned here into my future career in public relations.
