Intern Diary: Joi

As my time at JMG PR comes to a close, there are so many memories made, lessons learned, and gratitude I have to share. I first discovered JMG, as many do, through their Instragram my Freshman year of college, little did Freshman Joi know she would find her way interning for such an innovative, creative, and strategic agency. Knowing that I wanted to improve my storytelling and writing skills, I saw Jenna and knew this company was perfect for my goals as she shared the many stories of local and regional entrepreneurs and founders of start-ups.

Before applying, I connected with Account Coordinator, Ryleigh Bannister, on LinkedIn. As a College senior, I was eager to hear her insights into how interning at JMG for multiple semesters in college led her to work for the company full-time. Her bright spirit and passion for the work she does across accounts and for the culture she found rooted in JMG helped me to truly see how much of an impact JMG was having on not only the clients they serve but the impact they were having on account executives and team members alike. From that call, I knew this internship would be able to challenge my skill set and allow me to build upon the foundations I had built through class work and past internships. Ryleigh not only became the executive I worked under but a mentor of mine to whom I owe so much of my experience.

So often, experts have shared that remote work is becoming looked down upon as it is contributing to the mental health crises plaguing the nation. However, I can say with all certainty that JMG has cracked the code to bring personalized and genuine relationships back to the hybrid world. Whether it was catching up with Ryleigh through our morning meeting chats, having Sip The Tea with the full company, or getting to know the other interns and the amazing work they were contributing to their teams, I never felt alone in the process.

Through a multitude of tasks, I was able to expand on my writing, research, and strategy skills. From researching, to media list building, drafting pitches, and emailing reporters, I truly encountered the cyclical process that is public relations and experienced firsthand how the news cycle deeply impacts the work we do as PR practitioners. By staying proactive and ahead of trends, I learned that no matter what industry a client may be connected to, it is always important to have news knowledge and be aware of the threats and opportunities it can place on your work and the accounts you interact with.

Overall, my experience at JMG has been nothing short of incredible. I set out to become a stronger storyteller and writer, and the experience I hoped for came back tenfold.  With the long-lasting connections I’ve made, to the work I was able to contribute- I could not have asked for a better team to do it alongside. Thank you JMG PR!
