Intern Diary: Grace
On my first day as a remote intern at JMG PR, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had the usual nerves…Will I be helpful? Can I keep up? What does a real PR team actually do every day? But I also had an excitement I couldn’t shake. I knew I was walking into a fast-paced environment full of storytellers, and I couldn’t wait to find out what that really meant.
One of my first big wins came sooner than I expected. After loads of research, refining a pitch, and carefully curating a media list, I landed a media placement in a tier-one outlet. That moment was surreal—seeing something I had written lead to a real result for a client felt like crossing an invisible threshold. I wasn’t just learning PR, I was doing it.
That placement wasn’t luck. It came from hours of listening, revising, and asking questions, all with the support of a team and my amazing account executive, Elyssa, who never made me feel like “just the intern.” I had a seat at the table (even if it was virtual), and I learned quickly that curiosity and creativity go a long way in this field.
But as proud as I am of the skills I gained, writing stronger, pitching smarter, thinking more strategically, what I’ll remember most is the people I met along the way. Despite being remote, this internship never felt isolating. From Slack threads filled with encouragement and memes to “Sip the Tea” sessions that always have me giggling, I built friendships I didn’t expect and connections I hold dearly. Everyone I worked with was generous with their time, honest with their feedback, and eager to see me grow. That culture of support made all the difference.
I was given space to explore my interests, especially in media writing, and was constantly encouraged to speak out and push myself creatively. I now understand how these outlets can be used not just to promote a brand, but to build a genuine voice and community. That’s a lesson I’ll take with me wherever I go next.
As I close this chapter, I feel incredibly grateful. JMG PR gave me more than just experience, it gave me confidence, clarity, and a community. I came in hoping to learn the ropes. I’m leaving with a much clearer picture of the kind of PR professional I want to be and the kind of people I want to surround myself with.
