Intern Diary: Aiyanna

I came across this internship on Instagram one day, and I never thought it would have turned out as great as it did. I got the opportunity to spend the summer working as a PR intern with JMG Public Relations. During my time, I worked with a variety of clients from different industries and learned how to bridge the gap between classroom concepts and hands-on work along the way.

My daily tasks included writing press releases, press summaries, pitches, briefing memos, and creating press clippings. My days also consisted of a lot of research, which I absolutely loved. I learned how to use Muck Rack to build targeted media lists and research companies for client partnerships. Getting experience with different types of clients has helped me discover which industries I’m interested in while also learning a bit more about each one.

It was so interesting to see just how much work goes on behind the scenes for clients. Storytelling is a huge part of PR, and I developed writing skills to pitch story angles that catch the media's attention. I previously worked for the student newspaper and had some knowledge of news and journalism. So it was different, but eye-opening to see media coverage come to life from the other side with PR.

Before interning with JMG, I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do after college. I liked the idea of PR from what I learned in school, but I didn’t have any real experience to compare my interest with. However, I can now say that I want to pursue a career in PR after graduating. I discovered a lot about myself as a person and as a worker. And I feel so much more knowledgeable about the field as I head into my final year of college.

I really appreciate how much this company values connection. Even though it’s remote, everyone was super involved the entire time. My team leaders, Ainsley and Cara, were extremely helpful and always willing to guide and assist me through tasks. I also appreciate the training days that we were given before starting work so that we knew what to expect and how to prepare for tasks. I can sincerely say that everyone wants you to succeed as an intern.

One of my favorite parts about this internship was that I was constantly challenged. Cara and Ainsley, never shied away from giving me new and unfamiliar tasks each day. I’m glad that they pushed me outside my comfort zone, because that’s where most of my growth occurred. It’s great to be trusted with real tasks every day and to see your work make a difference. I am so grateful for this internship, which helped me grow and prepare for my future as a PR professional. I feel so much more prepared to enter the job market with my newfound skills. I’m so grateful that JMG took a chance on me and helped me to improve my skills and confidence.
