Intern Diary: Victoria
When I first received my care package from Jenna in the mail after accepting my offer as a public relations intern, I was instantly excited for the journey ahead.
The personalized touch—a notebook, a pencil pouch, and a copy of her book—made me feel like I was already part of something special. From my initial interview to my first few days on the team, I felt incredibly welcomed. One thing I appreciated right away was how transparent everyone was about the internship: it would be a lot of work, but also a truly rewarding experience. And that’s exactly what it turned out to be.
Throughout my time at JMG PR, I’ve learned so much about what it means to work in the public relations industry. I’ve gained firsthand experience of the foundational elements of PR, from conducting background research and building media lists to drafting real media pitches and creating professional documents for clients, including briefing memos, press summaries, and clippings. Each task helped me sharpen my writing, research, and strategic thinking skills.
I also had the unique opportunity to observe and be part of a fully remote team of incredibly talented and driven women. This experience taught me not only how to communicate effectively in a virtual work environment but also how to manage deadlines, contribute to a team from afar, and remain organized and proactive with assignments.
One of the biggest highlights for me was the consistent support I received from my supervisors. I had the pleasure of working with three different mentors throughout the semester, and each one brought something different to the table. They were patient, encouraging, and always made sure I felt comfortable asking questions. I never felt judged—instead, I was reminded that questions are a natural part of the learning process, and a sign that I was growing.
Although this internship was unpaid, the value I gained from the experience was truly priceless. This was my first real professional experience as a young woman entering a highly competitive industry, and it has had a huge impact on me. Looking back, I now feel so much more confident in my career path. I’ve realized that I can do this—even without years of experience behind me—and that I have what it takes to succeed in a fast-paced PR setting.
I’m incredibly thankful for everyone at JMG who helped guide me along the way and contributed to my growth. I hope to stay connected and continue learning from the amazing people I had the chance to work with. This internship has been such an important stepping stone, and I’m truly excited for what comes next.
