Intern Diary: Niko
I spent my spring semester interning at JMG Public Relations and I’ve learned more than I ever could have in a classroom. I’ve gotten the chance to work on projects that helped me develop my work ethic for my career. As I reflect on my time interning this semester, I feel a real sense of pride in how much I’ve grown and how much I’ve been able to contribute. Coming into this experience, I was eager to learn more about the inner workings of PR, but I didn’t fully realize how hands-on and dynamic the work would be.
Taking that step to dive in and fully commit to the opportunity ended up being one of the most valuable decisions I’ve made for my professional development.
Throughout the internship, I strengthened my skills in research and content development in ways that felt both challenging and rewarding. Whether I was researching potential TED Talk opportunities for clients or diving into podcast discovery, I learned that strong research is the backbone of meaningful storytelling and strategic outreach. It’s not just about finding information, it's about finding the right information and understanding how it can be used to position a client effectively. That process pushed me to think more critically and intentionally with every assignment.
I also gained a new appreciation for content creation and media strategy through tasks like watching long-form content and pulling timestamps to create shorter, engaging video clips. At first, it seemed simple, but I quickly realized how much attention to detail and audience awareness it requires. Identifying the exact moments that would resonate most taught me how to think from both a creative and strategic lens, something that’s essential in today’s fast-paced digital landscape.
One of the most memorable parts of my experience was participating in the “Sip the Tea” calls. The Spider-Man themed session, in particular, stood out as such a fun and engaging way to connect pop culture with PR strategy. It showed me how relevant trends and cultural moments can be leveraged creatively in our work, while also building a sense of community within the team. Those moments made the experience feel collaborative and energized, rather than purely task-driven.
Beyond the technical skills, what truly made this internship impactful was the environment and the people. I felt consistently supported, encouraged to ask questions, and challenged to improve. Feedback wasn’t something to fear it became a tool for growth. That shift in mindset is something I’ll carry with me moving forward.
Overall, this experience solidified my interest in pursuing PR after graduation. It showed me that the field is not only about communication, but about curiosity, creativity, and constant learning. I’m walking away with stronger skills, more confidence, and a clearer vision of the kind of work I want to continue doing.
